Birth: Founded in 1863.

Death: Unless the fundamentalists have their way, it will last as long as the U.S. does.

Comments: The National Academy of Science is a Federally chartered corporation originally founded as a consequence of an Act of Incorporation passed in 1863 and signed by Abraham Lincoln. The Academy consists of about 2,100 members and 380 foreign associates. New members are elected for life by current members, and membership is considered one of the most prestigious honors that a scientist can attain. Nearly 200 members of the National Academy of Sciences members are Nobel laureates. In general, if you are on the wrong side of the National Academy of Sciences on an issue, you are probably also wrong on the science.
