Author - Watts, Peter

Birth: January 25, 1958.

Death: Still writing and prudently avoiding the United States.

Comments: Peter Watts is a Canadian science fiction author and biologist. Watts holds a B.S. and an M.S. from the University of Guelph and a Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia. In addition to his work in academia, Watt's has published several novels, including the Rifters trilogy Starfish, Maelstrom, and βehemoth, as well as the Hugo nominated Blindsight and its sequels Echopraxia and Firefall, and the recently published Freeze-Frame Revolution.

Watts has been a finalist for the Hugo Award three times, winning once for his novelette The Island. He has also been nominated for the Locus Award twice and the Campbell Award once.

In 2009, Watts was detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection while crossing the U.S.-Canadian border, after which he was arrested on what appears to have been a pretty flimsy pretext, although that did not prevent the government from being able to secure a conviction. Though he only received a suspended sentence and a fine, the conviction prevents Watts from reentering the United States, which is a damn shame and a loss for American fandom. On the other hand, I'm guessing he's not particularly eager to return, and I don't blame him for that.

Watts is married to Canadian fantasy author Caitlin Sweet.

Watts has a website named Echopraxia. He can also be found on Facebook.
