Musical Artist - Parton, Dolly

Dolly Parton is an American country music icon. She is also a songwriter, record producer, actress, author, and philanthropist. After a successful start as a songwriter, Parton released her first album in 1967 launching a recording career that has spanned more than sixty albums. She has had twenty-one songs reach number one on the country charts, and forty-one albums reach the top ten. Over the course of her career, she has had more than one hundred and ten charted singles. Parton's hit singles include classic tunes such as I Will Always Love You, Jolene, Coat of Many Colors, and 9 to 5.

In addition to her magnificent recording career, Parton has also had significant success as an actress. Parton appeared as a regular on The Porter Wagoner Show, and headlined two different self-named variety shows in the 1970s. Her first major feature film role was in the comedy 9 to 5, and since then she has appeared in several other movies including The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Rhinestone, Steel Magnolias, and Straight Talk.

Over the course of her professional career, Parton has received nine Grammy Awards, two Academy Award nominations, ten Country Music Association Awards, seven Academy of Country Music Awards, three American Music Awards, and the Country Music Association's Entertainer of the Year Award. Parton has received a total of forty-seven Grammy nominations.

Parton invested much of her money in the Dollywood Corporation, which owns and manages the theme park Dollywood and several other attractions in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. She was also co-owner of Sandollar Productions, which produced the Academy Award-winning documentary Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt, the television series Babes and Buffy the Vampire Slayer as well as the movies Father of the Bride, Father of the Bride: Part II, and Sabrina.

In addition to her impressive professional and business careers, Parton has an even more impressive career as a philanthropist. Through her Dollywood Foundation, Parton has raised money for the Red Cross and for HIV/AIDS related charities. Through her foundation, Parton runs Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, a literacy charity that mails a book a month to every enrolled child from the time of their birth until they enter kindergarten. Over the years, the Imagination Library has donated more than 100 million books.
