Book Blogger New Year's Challenge of 2014 - How Many Books Are On Your To-Be-Read Shelf?

How Many Books Are On Your To-Be-Read Shelf?

The answer to this question depends to a certain extent on what you count as a to-be-read shelf. If you just count the review copies that I have, then I have thirty-six books on my to-be-read shelf. If you count the books that I have sitting in the numerous stacks that I have put the books that I'd like to get to "soon", the number increases by an addition three hundred and twelve books. And then if one counts all of the books that I have in my house that I have not read yet, the total number rises to six thousand one hundred and fifty-three.

If I apply myself, I can probably get through the review copies by the end of March or April. I might be able to get through the "soon" pile in the next two years or so. But the pile of unread books is likely to occupy me for the rest of my life. The entire publishing industry could vanish tomorrow and I'll have enough reading material for the next fifty plus years. I don't think publishers will stop publishing books though, so I suppose I'll be running the Red Queen's race for quite a while.

  1. Over 6000 books? Really??? I'm pretty sure that I don't have that many (even if I refuse to count them), so very, very glad that someone has more books than I do! I was feeling bad because most of the blogs I visited have around 100 books. I have more than that on a single small bookcase, so was feeling like a giant book hoarder! Glad to know I'm not alone in preparing for the worldwide book shortage!

    1. @Alexia561: I keep track of my books on LibraryThing and with an Excel spreadsheet, so I can have a reasonably accurate count. Right now I have just over 8.500 total books, so you shouldn't feel like your collection is too out of hand. Of course, I don't think my collection is out of hand either. I just wonder why everyone doesn't have their home lined with bookshelves.

  2. Approximately 200. Currently reading 3 new books. That's what happens. I leave my TBR pile waiting and buy new books.

    1. @Julia Rachel Barrett: Even with thousands of unread books, I still buy more every time I go out to a library book sale or used book store.

  3. my "TBR shelf" is constantly evolving. Books that I'm meaning to get to fairly soon usually end up or underneath the coffee table. But lately, there is a bunch of stuff on there that I've finished, but don't have space on my bookshelves for. I just got a bunch of anthologies and a few novels that i need to read for review, and there is some new goodies on the kindle. so realistically? my TBR shelf is probably 10-15 titles. about half the books I buy are "I'll get to this eventually, no plans to read it right now".

    1. @Abdrea J.: If you don't have room on your shelves for the books you've finished, it sounds like you need more shelves.

  4. You have 6,000 unread books in your house. Can I be your roommate, please? I'd love to live in a library. :D
