Follow Friday - "157 Riverside Avenue" Is an REO Speedwagon Song

It's Friday again, and this means it's time for Follow Friday. There has been a slight change to the format, as now there are two Follow Friday hosts blogs and two Follow Friday Features Bloggers each week. To join the fun and make now book blogger friends, just follow these simple rules:
  1. Follow both of the Follow My Book Blog Friday Hosts (Parajunkee and Alison Can Read) and any one else you want to follow on the list.
  2. Follow the two Featured Bloggers of the week - Read Write All the Time and The Book Swarm.
  3. Put your Blog name and URL in the Linky thing.
  4. Grab the button up there and place it in a post, this post is for people to find a place to say hi in your comments.
  5. Follow, follow, follow as many as you can, as many as you want, or just follow a few. The whole point is to make new friends and find new blogs. Also, don't just follow, comment and say hi. Another blogger might not know you are a new follower if you don't say "Hi".
  6. If someone comments and says they are following you, be a dear and follow back. Spread the love . . . and the followers.
  7. If you want to show the link list, just follow the link below the entries and copy and paste it within your post!
  8. If you're new to the Follow Friday Hop, comment and let me know, so I can stop by and check out your blog!
And now for the Follow Friday Question: What living author or authors would you like to have dinner with? (Try to think beyond J.K. Rowling.)

Follow Friday is a day late today. Yesterday I attended a library book sale and acquired several dozen books, so most of my day after that was spent cleaning and cataloging them rather than writing anything for the blog.

I'm going to pick three authors, listed here in no particular order, because I think having more than one author at the table would help engender interesting conversation. The three authors I would pick are:

Ursula K. Le Guin: My first choice for a dinner companion would be Ursula K. Le Guin. No one who reads this blog will be surprised at my deep and abiding love for Le Guin and her work. She is, in my opinion, one of the greatest science fiction authors, and the best female science fiction author of all time. I have loved her fiction since I first opened my copy of A Wizard of Earthsea as a boy. Further, by all accounts she is as brilliant, profound, and witty in person as she is in her writing, which would make her an incredibly interesting and fascinating dinner companion.

John Scalzi: My second dinner companion would be the hilarious and brilliant John Scalzi, who is a fantastic science fiction author with several novels under his belt, a prolific blogger whose blog Whatever has been a going concern for almost two decades, and a generally sharp and incisively humorous guy. Although I have never met him in person, I can say with confidence that if his real life persona is half as engaging as his online persona is, then an evening with Scalzi would be an experience not to be missed.

Catherine Asaro: The only one of the three authors listed here who I have actually met, Catherine Asaro is almost a force of nature by herself. She is a fantastic author, a Harvard educated physicist, a dancer, and a singer. I am firmly convinced that no matter what artistic or professional endeavor she decided to take up, she'd be brilliant at it. Her wide ranging interests and accomplishments would make her a stellar dinner companion, and having seen her on several panels at science fiction conventions, if the conversation ever got stuck in a lull, she'd be able to prod things along and get the discussion going again.

As an aside, Catherine is currently doing a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for an audio book version of her anthology Aurora in Four Voices. The anthology collects several of Asaro's novellas and short stories into one volume, including the Hugo- and Nebula-nominated story Aurora in Four Voices and the Nebula-winning story The Spacetime Pool. If you are interested, you can find the Kickstarter at this link.
