Book Blogger Hop May 6th - May 12th: 153 Is the 17th Triangular Number

Book Blogger Hop

Jen at Crazy for Books restarted her weekly Book Blogger Hop to help book bloggers connect with one another, but then couldn't continue, so she handed the hosting responsibilities off to Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. The only requirements to participate in the Hop are to write and link a post answering the weekly question and then visit other blogs that are also participating to see if you like their blog and would like to follow them.

This week Billy asks: Why did you start your blog?

I mostly started this blog to give myself something to write on a regular basis. Actually, that's not quite accurate, I started this blog to give me something to write that I could decide the topic for on a regular basis. I already write quite a bit in my profession, but most of my writing in that context is technical legal writing, and, to be perfectly honest, can be tedious work. Here, on the other hand, I get to decide what to write about, and how much to write about it.

I started writing reviews of books, movies, television, and other media on the blog mostly as a favor to my friends and relatives. Putting my reactions to a piece of media into writing means that I don't feel the need to talk about it incessantly afterwards. Although the redhead, for example, enjoys many of the same books, movies, and television shows that I do, she doesn't enjoy engaging in the same kind of analysis that I do. So I do that here and spare her from having to listen to some of that. Oddly, despite her general indifference to taking a piece of fiction apart and scrutinizing it in detail, she does read the material I put on the blog (and serves as something of an informal copy editor for me, finding typos and grammar mistakes).

  1. I know writing a blog seems more relaxing for me and writing for work...not so much. It's nice that your wife reads your stuff. My husband doesn't even know how to find my blog but he does cheer me from the sidelines ;)

    1. @Teri Lloyd: The redhead and I share most of the same geeky interests, but we enjoy them in different ways. I tend to take a piece of fiction and break it down to see how it works (and often nitpick it to death), while she takes a more holistic view.

Not only does the redhead know how to find my blog, she designed the logo and website that hosts all of our blogs.

    2. Oh interesting Holistic point of view. That I'd like to read. It is great that you and your redhead can do this.

    3. @Teri Lloyd: She reviews books (albeit somewhat sporadically) at Reading About Other Worlds.
