Musical Artist - The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones are a British rock band, and one of the most successful and enduring rock acts of all time. Founded in 1962 by Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, Keith Richards, Ian Stewart, Bill Wyman, and Charlie Watts, the band was one of the primary groups of the British Invasion, and a powerhouse in the 1960s and 1970s, turning out hit after hit. Jones left the band in 1969, and was replaced by Mick Taylor, who was himself replaced remained until 1974. After Taylor left the band, Ronnie Wood took his place in 1975. Wyman left the band in 1993 and was replaced by Darryl Jones. There have been other lineup changes over the years, but despite these shifts in personnel the Stones are still a going concern as of 2018.

Over their fifty plus year existence, the Stones have released more than two dozen studio albums resulting in more than fifty top forty hits, eight of which reached the top of the U.S. Billboard charts. A truncated list of their best known hits includes songs such as Angie, Brown Sugar, Get Off of My Cloud, Honky Tonk Women, (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Miss You, Paint It Black, Ruby Tuesday, and Start Me Up. To be blunt, the Stones have been so prolific as hit-makers and active for so long that laying out all of the familiar music that the they have produced over the decades would result in a list far too unwieldy to reasonably manage.

Although the Stones have faded from the mainstream pop scene in recent years - they haven't really had a hit record since 1990, they have been one of the most consistently popular live acts. Through their career, the Rolling Stones have undertaken four dozen tours. Four of the top five grossing concert tours in history were done by the Stones, all four of which occurred in 1994 or later. Though they haven't made significant impact upon the charts in almost three decades, they continue to sell out arenas all over the world.

The Rolling Stones have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the UK Music Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone magazine ranked them fourth on the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" list originally published in 2004 and updated in 2011.
