World Fantasy Award Winners for Best Collection

In 1975, when the World Fantasy Awards were created, the designers made a decision that would set these awards apart from the other major awards in existence like the Hugos and the Nebulas. Like those other awards they included categories to honor individual works of short fiction, but unlike those awards they included a category to honor collections of short fiction, something that no other award to that point had done.

This award was given in 1975 and 1976. It was then expanded to include anthologies, and the combined category was honored until 1987, when the anthology portion was moved to its own category. In 1988, the Best Collection category was returned to its original configuration and has been awarded from that point to the present.
