The Allman Brothers Band was formed in 1969 and was originally composed of Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks, and Jai Johanson. The band first found significant success in 1971 with the release of their live album At Filmore East, but suffered tragedy later that year when founding member Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident, and then were struck another blow a year later when Berry Oakley was also killed in a motorcycle accident. The band recruited Chuck Leavell and Lamar Williams to replace the departed, and continued together until they broke up in 1976.

The Allman Brothers Band produced numerous gold and platinum albums, and turned out several memorable songs that have become ingrained in the fabric of country rock music including Whipping Post, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Rambling Man, Midnight Rider, and Melissa. The band reformed in the late 1970s, broke up again in 1982, reformed once more in 1989 and continued together until the band retired for good in 2014.
