Comments: Ann Leckie's Ancillary Justice had already won both the Clarke and Nebula Awards, which one would think would have positioned the book as the front runner for winning the Campbell Award. But looking through the other nominees, one is struck by just how stiff the competition was in this year, as Leckie was going up against (among others) Nicola Griffith's Hild, Linda Nagata's The Red: First Light, Charles Stross' Neptune's Brood, and Paul J, McAuley's Evening's Empires. After a somewhat disappointing slate in 2013, the Campbell awards seem to have rebounded to offer a set of nominees that is both diverse and impressive.
