Ron Moody is an English actor best known for his performance as Fagin in the stage and movie musical
Oliver!, as well as numerous roles in children's television series. He won a Golden Globe for his performance in
Oliver!, and also secured an Oscar nomination for the role. Originally trained as a sociologist, Moody didn't take up acting until his late twenties, eventually securing roles on television shows such as
The Animals of Farthing Wood,
Noah's Island, and
Discworld. Moody is also notable for a role that he
didn't accept: In 1969, fresh off his award winning movie appearance as Fagin in
Oliver!, Moody was offered the role of the Doctor on the television show
Doctor Who after Patrick Troughton left the program, an offer that he chose to decline. He has subsequently said he regrets the decision, and it is somewhat interesting to consider what a Moody era of
Doctor Who in place of the John Pertwee era might have looked like.
Moody was a bachelor for much of his life, eventually marrying Therese Blackbourn at the age of 61, and subsequently fathering six children.
