Vangelis (1943-Present) is the stage name of Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou, a Greek composer of electronic-oriented music. Vangelis is best known for his ethereal soundtracks for movies like
Chariots of Fire,
Alexander, and
Blade Runner, and television shows like
Cosmos. Despite being such a prominent composer, having released more than fifty albums of music, Vangelis spent most of his career unable to read music. After performing as part of several different groups for much of the nineteen-sixties, he struck out on his own as a solo artist in 1973 with the album
Earth. In 1981, he wrote the score of the movie
Chariots of Fire, for which he won an Academy Award.
