2009 Hugo Longlist

I've written before about how the information concerning the statistics that allow me to put together the "longlists" for each year gets less and less complete as one works their way backwards in time. The nomination statistics released for the 2009 Hugo Awards are where this begins to be readily apparent. Unlike the nomination statistics of more recent years, which list the candidates in each category who received enough nominations to reach the top fifteen along with the total number of nominations and the percentage of the total number of ballots they appeared upon, the 2009 data lists all of the candidates in each category who received more then five total nominations. In some categories this resulted in a reported list of several dozen works, while in others the total barely reached fifteen total nominees. The exceptionally large number of nominees listed in some categories makes this list somewhat less than useful as a guidepost to what Worldcon voters thought were examples of superior science fiction and fantasy in 2008, because the lists have so many nominees many of whom had quite small amounts of support. At some point, for completeness purposes, I may supplement this "longlist" with another post containing these additional nominees, but I believe that listing them here would unnecessarily clutter up the longlist for this year.

The 2009 data does not provide percentages showing what percentage of the total nominations in that category each particular work or person received, so to figure out if a candidate appeared on fewer than five percent of the total ballots, I had to do the calculation myself. The data was also presented in very tiny type with the nominees in unnumbered lists - and the information concerning finalists who were disqualified for ineligibility or who simply declined nominations being reported in a manner that made these details easy to miss.

The deficiencies in the data are not merely confined to areas where certain figures have been left uncalculated and some points have been presented in a less than clear manner. In some cases, information has simply been left out. It is not entirely unexpected that none of the editors of the longlisted nominees for Best Semiprozine or Best Fanzine were included, but there was one longlisted nominees for Best Related Work and another for Best Graphic Story for which the names of the creators were omitted as well. One expects the data to degrade in quality as one goes backwards in time, but this is data from 2009, a mere seven years prior to the time of this writing. That is a pretty steep decline in data quality in just over a handful of years, which may not bode well for being able to reach back much further with this project.
