Birth: February 8, 1969.

Death: Still alive and puppeteering.

Comments: Mary Robinette Kowal is an American science fiction author and puppeteer. Kowal studied art at East Carolina University, and has been a very successful professional puppeteer since 1989. In her puppetry career she has performed for the Center for Puppetry Arts, Jim Henson Productions, and in Iceland for the children's television show Lazy Town. She is the founder of Other Hand Productions, and has won two UNIMA-USA Citations of Excellence for her puppet designs.

While her puppetry career has been brilliant, she turned her creative energies up a notch when she became a published author in 2005. Since then, she has been a very successful science fiction author in addition to continuing her puppetry career, winning the John Campbell Award for Best New Writer, and a Hugo Award for Best Short Story. She also does voice acting and has provided the voice for several audio books. She is also a member of the cast of Writing Excuses.

Kowal was Secretary of the SFWA for two years, and in 2010 she was elected Vice-President of the organization. She maintains a website named Mary Robinette Kowal, and you can follow her on Twitter.
