Author - McAllister, Bruce

Birth: 1946.

Death: Still alive and teaching people how to write.

Comments: Bruce McAllister is a science fiction writer and writing teacher with two novels and a couple dozen published short stories to his name. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland into a Navy family and spent most of his youth moving about. When he was a young man he audaciously wrote a hundred and fifty letters to writers asking them if they intentionally placed symbolism into their writing, hoping to resolve a disagreement with his English teacher. Several writers replied, and almost all of the ones who gave substantive answers denied placing symbols into their writing, confirming McAllister's view that literary analysis had nothing to do with writers, and more to do with the scholars inventing a reason for their own existence.

McAllister eventually joined the ranks of academia, earning degrees in English and writing from Claremont McKenna College and University of California, Irvine before joining the faculty of the University of Redlands to teach literature and writing. He later left the university to found McAllister Coaching, intended to help writers shape their manuscripts. You can also find him on Facebook.
