Book Blogger Hop August 3rd - August 9th: Nigel Tufnel's Amplifiers Go to ELEVEN!

Book Blogger Hop

Jen at Crazy for Books has restarted her weekly Book Blogger Hop to help book bloggers connect with one another. The only requirements to participate in the Hop are to write and link a post answering the weekly question and then visit other blogs that are also participating to see if you like their blog and would like to follow them. A complete explanation of the history and the rules of the Hop can be found here.

This week Jen asks: When a book goes “viral” (Hunger Games, Fifty Shades, Twilight), do you rush out to read it like everyone else, even if it’s not in your typical genre?

No. Not because I'm making some sort of statement, but rather because I obtain almost all of my books second hand. I make the rounds at library book sales and frequent used book stores, and usually don't get the "viral" books until the people who bought them during the media frenzy have tired of them and dumped them off at some place that will resell them. Sometimes my apathy extends even further - I didn't get any of the Harry Potter books until my brother (at the time an employee of Little, Brown), sent me copies of the first four in the series.

My general indifference to getting the newly hyped books when they are published is, at least in part, driven by the fact that I have a pile of unread books that numbers in the thousands. Even if I were to get a book when it was "hot", it is likely that I wouldn't be able to get around to reading it for a year or two, so getting the book right away would be something of a waste for me.

  2. I'm with you :) No sense in reading the new hot thing when you have piles and piles of other books to get to first!

  3. Excellent points. For me, it just depends. If a viral book sounds interesting, I'll read it. If not, I won't. Simple as that.

I'm pretty sure I've visited your blog before, but I'm glad to have re-discovered it via the Hop!

  4. @Marce: One thing that always makes me just a little bit sad is the realization that despite my very best efforts, there are wonderful books that I will never be able to read just from a lack of time.

  5. @Jennifer Hartling: I always figure why rush out and buy the hot new thing when you know that it will just go to the back of a stack that will take a year or two to get through at least.

  6. @Susan: It generally works like that for me too. The Hunger Games got pushed up in the stack (although I still didn't read the first in the series until after Mockingjay had been published). On the other hand, the Twilight books are all still sitting on my shelf unread.
