2019 Hugo Award Longlist

Every now and then, the redhead asks me why I put together these Hugo longlist posts. They are a lot of work. The published Hugo stats that I draw them from are annoyingly incomplete in a lot of ways, requiring me to do more research than I normally would for an awards post. There is almost certainly a very tiny audience for this sort of thing. On the surface, it just seems like it is a lot of work for very little payoff. All of which is completely correct, and at the same time completely wrong.

To a certain extent, the relative obscurity of and comparative lack of interest in the works on the longlist is the point of putting together a Hugo longlist post. The works on the longlist aren't lesser works - in most cases they are just as good if not better than the works that make the finalist list - they are just not as well-known. The works on the longlist are also frequently more interesting than the works that make the finalist list.

The reason for this is a function of the somewhat fractured nature of the science fiction community. To make it to the finalist list, a work has to have broad support across a range of these subgroups. To make the longlist, a work can be of particular interest to a handful of subgroups, or in extreme cases, just one. This results in works making the longlist that deal with topics of intense interest to those groups, and those works are often more interesting than those that are supported by a broad spectrum of voices.

For example, look at the Related Work category for this year. The finalists are all fine entries, but for the most part they cover fairly well-worn territory. The longlisted entries, on the other hand include (among other things) The 2017 #BlackSpecFic Report by Cecily Kane, Hard Enough by Marissa Lingen, I Belong Where the People Are: Disability and The Shape of Water by Elsa Sjunneson-Henry, and On Motherhood and Erasure: people Shaped Holes, Hollow Characters and the Illusion of Impossible Adventures by Aliette de Bodard, each of which takes a specific and interesting topic and breaks it down in a compelling manner. These works explore corners of the speculative fiction world that one might miss if one were to only pay attention to what has percolated to the top of the list, and in my opinion, that would be a mistake.

2018 Hugo Award Longlist

The 2018 Hugo awards were the first since 2014 to be free of Puppy-related manipulation, and that appears to have extended to the Hugo Longlist as well. At the very least, I could not see any trace of Puppy-related support for any of the nominees who appear here. There might be, but if there is, I missed it, and that essentially means that the Scrappy Pups are essentially dead as a movement that matters. The die-hard members of that group will probably still run around for a few more years claiming "victory" using criteria that make no sense to anyone outside of their tiny circle-jerk, but as a movement that matters to anyone not in their insular clique, they are effectively a non-factor.

This means that we can turn to more important issues that need to be addressed, and the one that comes to my mind with this Hugo Longlist is the fact that when the Hugo administrators published the Hugo statistics for this year they left off the names of authors of the nominated stories and the various editors and other contributors to the nominated fanzines, semi-prozines, and fancasts. This isn't a new practice - several previous Hugo administrators have also omitted this information, and I really wish they would stop doing that. When it comes to the finalists, this isn't such a big issue, since the Hugo ballot includes this information, but for those works that are on the Longlist, this can be exceedingly annoying, especially if the work in question has an incredibly common name that makes looking them up to fill in this data time-consuming and tedious.

Therefore, I warn anyone looking at this Longlist that any author or contributor listed for any of the works outside of the official list of finalists are the results of my best efforts at research. I tried to attribute stories and publications to the correct individuals, but there is the possibility that I got something wrong. If I did get something wrong, and you know the correct information, please send me a note so I can correct the error.

Lodestar Award Winners for Best Young Adult Book

In 2018, after much wailing and gnashing of teeth, the World Science Fiction Society introduced the World Science Fiction Society Award for Best Young Adult Book. Stubbornly insisting that this award is not a Hugo, and not wanting to name the award after a person (either living or dead), the WSFS adopted the name "Lodestar" for the award, although they didn't officially use the name in its inaugural appearance.

To usher in the award, the WSFS arranged for Felicia Day to make a surprise appearance at Worldcon 76 and present the award. Day was pretty much the perfect person to choose for this role: She was witty and funny on the podium, and expressed a beautifully fannish combination of awe of and love for all of the authors she had met at the convention. Day reminds everyone that the intersection of creator and fandom can and should be a wonderful place. The initial award went to Nnedi Okorafor who, although she was not able to be present, sent along a speech in which she said if she were, she would that she would smirk as "a book full of JuJu and Nigerian witchcraft won the award with no name yet".
