2020 Hugo Award Finalists

Comments: As has been so often the case in the last couple of years, the Hugo finalists are dominated by female and minority authors. I don't think this is a mistake and I think it is a development that is well past due.

I have noted elsewhere that historically the Hugos have been biased against women (a statement to which I will add that they seem to have been even more biased against minority authors), but that on those relatively infrequent occasions when women were elevated to a finalist slot, they had a remarkably good winning percentage. In short, it seems to have been very difficult for a woman to get on the final ballot, but once there, a work by a woman seems to have had a better than average chance of winning.

There reason, I believe, is because the women and minority authors who did get nominated had produced work that was of such superior quality that they simply could not be ignored, while white male authors were benefiting from the general institutionalized racism and sexism of society and were able to get nominated with merely good pieces of work. What this means is that women and minorities have been continually upping their game over the years while many white male authors seem to have become complacent. Their work was good enough to get nominated. Why should they strive for better?

And now that the gates have been opened, there is a tidal wave of great work by women and minority authors flooding through, which makes the award better, to our benefit. It was always there, but now the doors to the Hugos have been opened, at least more than they were before.

2019 Hugo Award Finalists

Location: Dublin 2019 - An Irish Worldcon in Dublin, Ireland.

Comments: The first thing to know about this year's Hugo finalists is that for the first time in four years, N.K. Jemisin will not win a Hugo, but only because as far as I can tell, she did not write anything in 2018 eligible to get nominated onto this list. Even without Jemisin, this year's list of finalists is fantastic, with excellent nominees up and down the list in every category.

This year's finalists are notable for two reasons. The first is the introduction of the Best Art Book category, more or less splitting that category off from the Best Related Work category where such works had previously been relegated. The other is the nomination in the Best Related Work category of An Archive of Our Own and The Mexicanx Initiative Experience at Worldcon 76, neither of which are traditional finalists in this category. One might suspect that the first of these two events is at least partially responsible for opening up the field so that the second could occur. This sort of development is among the primary reasons why this is truly a great time to be a science fiction fan.

2018 Hugo Award Finalists

Comments: So, the Puppy Wars seem to be over. With the release of the list of finalists for the 2018 Hugo Awards, it is clear that the Sad and Rabid Puppies have finally given up and slunk away to whine to each other in their pathetic little circle jerk on the edge of the genre fiction world. I'll leave it to others to catalogue the mewling from the Puppy-verse concerning this set of finalists as they engage in the "those grapes are probably sour anyway" complaining (and they are), but for my part I'm just glad that this year I don't have to sort the finalists by whether they were gamed onto the ballot by maliciously motivated bloc voting or were voted onto the ballot because a lot of people actually loved the work.

While the net result of the lack of Puppy influence on the ballot is a collection of finalists that is the strongest the Hugos have seen in the last three years, that isn't the only development this year has seen. After years of debate, the World Science Fiction Society had added a new award for young adult fiction. This is technically not a Hugo Award in the same way that the Ray Bradbury Award and the Andre Norton Award are not Nebula Awards, and the distinction makes just as little sense here as it does there. The WSFS Young Adult Award has the same set of people nominating and voting for it as the Hugo Awards, uses all the same rules, and will be awarded at the same ceremony. Sticking out one's bottom lip and firmly stating that this award is "not a Hugo" is about the silliest thing I could imagine here, and yet that's what the WSFS has decided to do. The reality is that the ploy almost certainly won't work. People will talk about the young adult fiction award as if it were a Hugo Award, and treat it like it is a Hugo Award. I believe that the various WSFS committees that deal with such matters will try to correct the record on a regular basis, and I predict that pretty much no one (including most of the members of the WSFS) will pay much attention to them.
