Author - Ing, Dean

Birth: 1931.

Death: Still alive and planning how to survive a nuclear war.

Comments: Dean Ing is an American science fiction and techno-thriller writer whose works often incorporate survivalist themes. He has asserted that he intentionally includes didactic elements in his fiction in an effort to educate his readers, often providing tips on how to survive the aftermath of nuclear war and other disasters. Ing appears to adhere to Heinlein's maxim that "specialization is for insects", and advocates that people should both understand and be able to make and maintain the technology that they use.

Ing is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon where he focused on communications theory. Dean Ing has collaborated on several novels with Mack Reynolds, stemming from an agreement the two authors worked out when Reynolds was near the end of his life. Reynolds wrote as many novel outlines as he could before he died, and Ing finished them with the understanding that a portion of the proceeds would be used to help support Reynold's widow.

Dean Ing has lived in Oregon for most of his life, and has an entry in the online Oregon Encyclopedia.
