Birth: September 8, 1954.
Death: Still alive and debunking pseudoscience.
Comments: Michael Shermer is a prominent skeptic who has made a living out of debunking nonsense. He is the founder of the Skeptic Society and the Editor-in-Chief of Skeptic Magazine. In his youth he became a born-again Christian and adhered to some fairly fundamentalist views until he realized that those views were untenable while he was in graduate school. He has since refused to accept any particular label for his beliefs, but could probably be best described as a secular humanist who questions almost everything. Shermer holds a Ph.D. in the history of science from Claremont Graduate University, and is currently an adjunct professor at that institution. He has written several books about science and skepticism, including Why People Believe in Weird Things (about why people buy in to strange and obviously false ideas) and Denying History: Who Says the Holocaust Never Happened and Why Do They Say It? (examining Holocaust deniers and debunking their claims). He maintains the self-named website Michael Shermer.
In an odd bit of trivia, the medical condition that sometimes afflicts long distance bikers known as "Shermer's Neck" is named after him. The condition originally gained its name when he was afflicted with it while participating in the Trans-America Bike Race.
