Death: Still alive and directing the study of science fiction.
Comments: James E. Gunn is a science fiction author. He is also a professor emeritus of English and the Director of the Center for the Study of Science Fiction at the University of Kansas. The Center is responsible for handing out the John W. Campbell, Jr. Memorial Award and the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award every year. He holds a B.A. in Journalism and a Masters in English, both from the University of Kansas.
Gunn has published about a hundred short stories and two dozen novels. In addition to his fiction work, Gunn is one of the more prominent members of academia who has devoted a fair amount of time to the scholarly study of the science fiction genre. Gunn's scholarly efforts earned him a Hugo Award in 1983 for the nonfiction book Isaac Asimov: The Foundations of Science Fiction. He served as president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association from 1971 to 1972, and was honored by that organization as a Grand Master in 2007.
