Me and Sparhawk at CapClave 2015 |
Death: Still alive and pulling off the nigh-impossible trick of writing humorous hard science fiction.
Comments: Bud Sparhawk is an American science fiction author. Although he has only had one novel make its way to print, Sparhawk has published dozens of works of short fiction, mostly in Analog Science Fiction and Fact, but also in various other genre publications. This bent towards short fiction writing makes Sparhawk something of a dying breed, as most authors in more recent years want to push into novel-writing as soon as possible. His work has proved fruitful, as he has been nominated for the Nebula Award three times.
Because he lives in Maryland, he is a regular attendee at CapClave. I met him at CapClave 2011 - which is where I heard him make his comment about how incredibly talented Ted Chiang is - and and again at CapClave 2015, and I can report that in addition to being an outstanding writer, Sparhawk is a really interesting and nice guy in person. Sparhawk has a website named Bud Sparhawk: Short Story Writer and a Facebook page. He has sometimes written under the name John C. Sparhawk.
