Death: September 30, 1987.
Comments: Alfred Bester was an American science fiction author mostly known for his two excellent and highly influential works in the genre: The Demolished Man (winner of the 1953 Hugo Award for best novel), and The Stars My Destination. In addition, the character from the Babylon 5 television show who shares his name was explicitly named after him, both as an homage by J. Michael Straczynski as a character and "in lore" as explained in J. Gregory Keyes' spin off book Dark Genesis: Birth of the Psi Corps. Frederik Pohl recently wrote about Bester in his online memoirs.
