Death: March 8, 1991.
Comments: John Bellairs is best known for his young adult oriented gothic mystery and horror novels, most of which feature Johnny Dixon, Lewis Barnaveldt, or Anthony Monday. Almost all of his young adult novels feature a bookish, thoughtful protagonist who has befriended and is mentored by an eccentric adult. Many of his books also feature Catholicism in some form or another, with a friendly priest often showing up to lend a hand in solving whatever mystery has presented itself to the youthful hero. Bellairs also wrote the fantasy classic The Face in the Frost. The bulk of his novels were illustrated by Edward Gorey.
