Cash Box Top 100 #1 Singles 1980-1989

Cash Box was a music industry trade magazine that was published as a print magazine between 1942 and 1996, but has been mostly an online publication in recent years. Among other things, the magazine published weekly lists of the top singles in multiple musical genres, using slightly different methodology than that used by the better known Billboard magazine and generating somewhat different results. Looking at the lists of the two magazines side-by-side, it is difficult to find a strong pattern to explain the differences. Cash Box seems to have slightly more R&B on their list, and more dance and alternative music, but I can't be sure that those are actual thematic differences or if they are just guesses on my part. Although this list and the list of #1 hits from Billboard have a lot of overlap, there are a sufficient number of differences that this makes an interesting counterpoint.

Book Blogger Hop April 6th - April 12th: If I Live Another 200 Years After This April 9th, I Will Be 249 Years Old

Jen at Crazy for Books restarted her weekly Book Blogger Hop to help book bloggers connect with one another, but then couldn't continue, so she handed the hosting responsibilities off to Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. The only requirements to participate in the Hop are to write and link a post answering the weekly question and then visit other blogs that are also participating to see if you like their blog and would like to follow them.

This week Billy asks: Do you overextend yourself with too many reviews because you can't pass up a book in hopes you will get them all done or do you carefully plan and be sure you can fulfill the deadlines for all the promised reviews?

I am terrible at meeting deadlines for book reviews. I find it impossible to read on a set schedule, and as a result I am unable to write reviews on a set schedule either. This doesn't stop me from accepting books for review, I just don't accept any books that have a deadline attached to them. I don't do blog tours for just this reason. If an author or a publisher approaches me with an offer of a book for review, but they want it reviewed by a particular date, I will simply pass on that book. I know that I am disorganized enough that I will probably not meet any deadline, so I don't put myself in a position where that is an issue to begin with. It also just isn't fair to the author or publisher to accept a book they are giving while knowing that I probably won't read and review their book on the timetable they are expecting.

1943 Retro Hugo Award Finalists (awarded in 2018)

Comments: I have written before about my philosophical reservations about the entire concept of the Retro Hugo Awards, and the list of finalists put forward this year just highlights those reservations. Both Heinlein and Asimov garnered four finalist slots each, and while they are both undeniably giants in the history of science fiction, I can't help but question whether those nominations were because of the quality of the works in question, or the fact that people remember the subsequent forty-some year careers that these men had. The same holds true for the nominations for Bester, del Rey, Leiber, and van Vogt: Were their stories nominated because they were actually the best stories from 1943, or were they nominated because they are the authors who had long careers that lasted for decades after 1943 and the Hugo electorate is familiar with them? The irresolvable nature of this question always haunts the Retro Hugo Awards, and in my opinion always makes the list of finalists suspect.

The difference in eras also shows up in other ways as well. Due to changes in popular media forms coupled with lack of interest among nominators in some categories, not all of the Hugo categories get a list of finalists, either due to a lack of candidates or a lack of sufficient numbers of nominations. This year, the Retro Hugos include a Best Short Form Dramatic Presentation category, but not a Best Long Form Dramatic Presentation Category. The oddity is that all of the Short Form finalists are feature films, a kind of media that usually fits into the Long Form Dramatic Presentation category. This oddness is due to the fact that the categories were defined in the modern era: To qualify for the Short Form category, a dramatic presentation must shorter than ninety minutes, and the Long Form entries must be longer. In recent years, this has meant that pretty much any feature length film will fall into the Long Form category, as almost all feature films are longer than ninety minutes. In the 1940s, on the other hand, movies were shorter - of the six finalists in the Dramatic Presentation category, only one, the Jungle Book, is longer than ninety minutes. This leads to the minor absurdity of a "Short Form" category filled with finalists of a type that the definition of the category was implicitly crafted to exclude. This is just one example of the awkwardness that ensues from taking categories meant to apply to the modern world of genre fiction and fandom and trying to apply them to the genre fiction and fandom from seven decades ago.

2018 Hugo Award Finalists

Comments: So, the Puppy Wars seem to be over. With the release of the list of finalists for the 2018 Hugo Awards, it is clear that the Sad and Rabid Puppies have finally given up and slunk away to whine to each other in their pathetic little circle jerk on the edge of the genre fiction world. I'll leave it to others to catalogue the mewling from the Puppy-verse concerning this set of finalists as they engage in the "those grapes are probably sour anyway" complaining (and they are), but for my part I'm just glad that this year I don't have to sort the finalists by whether they were gamed onto the ballot by maliciously motivated bloc voting or were voted onto the ballot because a lot of people actually loved the work.

While the net result of the lack of Puppy influence on the ballot is a collection of finalists that is the strongest the Hugos have seen in the last three years, that isn't the only development this year has seen. After years of debate, the World Science Fiction Society had added a new award for young adult fiction. This is technically not a Hugo Award in the same way that the Ray Bradbury Award and the Andre Norton Award are not Nebula Awards, and the distinction makes just as little sense here as it does there. The WSFS Young Adult Award has the same set of people nominating and voting for it as the Hugo Awards, uses all the same rules, and will be awarded at the same ceremony. Sticking out one's bottom lip and firmly stating that this award is "not a Hugo" is about the silliest thing I could imagine here, and yet that's what the WSFS has decided to do. The reality is that the ploy almost certainly won't work. People will talk about the young adult fiction award as if it were a Hugo Award, and treat it like it is a Hugo Award. I believe that the various WSFS committees that deal with such matters will try to correct the record on a regular basis, and I predict that pretty much no one (including most of the members of the WSFS) will pay much attention to them.

Musical Monday - Love of a Lifetime by FireHouse

A few days ago, a friend and I were talking about power ballads, and got into a small debate over exactly what constitutes a power ballad. For those who didn't grow up in the 1980s, power ballads are, at the most basic level, songs released by rock bands that are intended to be romantic and sweet, but still have enough amplified electric guitars to remind everyone that the band members really are rockers at heart. Virtually every hair metal band from Mötley Crüe to Poison to Europe released at least one power ballad. Although there were some exceptions, there was something of a pattern established by a lot of bands in which they released a high-energy rockin' song first, presumably to establish their "metal" bona fides, and then a power ballad so they could sell a lot of albums and pack stadiums full of women.

I was poking around this past weekend, and I believe that this song is the Platonic Ideal of a power ballad. It is a sweet, treacly love song with some edgy guitars thrown in. The band is a pretty typical 1980s hair metal band - it looks like about eighteen cans of Aqua-Net were used in the making of this video. The only thing they are lacking are color coordinated leather outfits akin to those Warrant wears in their video for the song Heaven. What really tops the cake here is that the video has a perfect visual representation of what a power ballad is starting at 0:39 where Bill Leverty appears playing an acoustic guitar that is on a stand while wearing an electric guitar so it will be ready for when the song transforms from the "ballad" portion of the song to the "power" part.
