Leonard Nimoy was an actor, director, author, photographer, and singer best known for playing the role of Spock in five different iterations of the
Star Trek franchise. After a number of small to mid-sized roles in various movies and television programs, Nimoy landed the role of Spock in the 1965 pilot episode
The Cage, and has been identified with the character ever since. Nimoy portrayed Spock in the
Star Trek: The Original Series,
Star Trek: The Animated Series,
Star Trek: The Next Generation, all six of the movies featuring the original
Star Trek Cast, and appears in the rebooted series movie
Star Trek: Into Darkness. Nimoy has also appeared in other science fiction productions, including an appearance as David Kibner in
Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and as Mustapha Mond in
Brave New World.
Despite Nimoy's many other roles, he is so associated with the character Spock that his two autobiographies are named
I Am Not Spock, and
I Am Spock, both of which are written in the form of a conversation between Nimoy the actor and the fictional character of Spock. Almost forgotten now is the fact that Nimoy was singer as well as an actor. Most people know that he recorded some songs, which are now dismissed as an attempt to cash in on his early Spock fame. But his recording career spanned
five albums, and even though he never had a big hit, that's more than a mere novelty act.
